some cutout clients are better than others
« on: May 19, 2017, 09:38:36 am »
I had a cutout in a three family that was converted to condos. the condo association has several buildings & a maintenance dept. the maintenance folks set up a scaffold for me. that really made the job easy. in the st louis area a lot of pre 1940 buildings have cold boxes in the kitchens. there is a wood panel on the outside below the window creating an insulated cabinet that was used for storing butter & milk in the winter. some of the panels ( on the 1st floor ) were hinged so the ice man could put ice in it from the outside. these spaces are favorites for bees. turns out there were 2 hives. one on the 2nd floor & one on the 3rd.

Nice and I agree I have one to do in a shed today, second one from same shed. Told them after last removal to keep dirt around edges, but they added a ramp and left a nice opening. Bees moved in within 3 days  floor cutout and 200.00 payment twice from same location 4 miles from me.... They cleaned the area and cleared inside where I will need to cut floor out.
Cheers, Bill

lee-the cold box? I rented a flat that had one & I actually used it. the neighborhood had become a little rough so I disabled the outside access. my 1st apartment had a small door in the kitchen pantry that opened to the hallway. at one time the building had a custodian & the door was used by him to remove your trash. there are some building that doubled up the use of the stairs to save floor space. the main staircase is hinged & counterweighted & opens to expose the stairs to access the basement. I lived in one that had a gate mounted to the rear stairwell wall. when you opened the stairs to access the basement stairs the gate closed off the stairs so you could not fall into the opening. it was kind of a waste considering that with the stairs open it was impossible to fall in. one last bit of architectural trivia. I rented a 2nd floor flat in San Francisco that had a lever on the wall at the top of the stairs. the lever was hooked to linkage that could unlock the door so you did not have to go down the stairs to open the door. kind of a 19th century version of buzzing someone in.
