Built this spring of 2016

A good queen will fill it wall to wall top to bottom

MIGHT take a frame out after they are drawn, to give a bit more room

Have pulled 39 medium frames of honey from this one this year.

There's a full medium on it for hte winter plus I replaced a super with 12 drawn combs in case we get a good goldenrod / other stuff flow into next month.

If you do get a good golden rod flow and they fill or partially fill the super I would take the earlier honey from super you want to leave on them for winter, and leave the bees the golden rod honey. the earlier honey is most likely a nicer honey that will not granulate as fast.

It refers to whether the frames run parallel with the entrance or at right angled like a Landstroth. Being interchangeable in the way they set on the bottom board was part of the square design of the British national hive. When the frames are at 90* to th entrance Cold Way placed this way in the sumer to give the bees better access and ventilation. For the winter the super was turned 90* so the cold air could come up the out side frame and the cluster a few frames in were sheltered from this air flow.
Rather than turning the super Langstroths solution was the reversible bottom board. 3/4" up in the summer for greater ventilation and flip it over and use the 3/8" proper bee space side for winter along with an entrance reducer.

More info ...   I use my British Nationals "warm way" throughout the year. I like to work them from the back. I find that the frame nearest the entrance is cooler. I put old frames there. The brood hatches but the Q does not re-lay. I can then remove the frame for disposal.

Barbarian you raise a good point. Where the bees/queen raise brood in relation to the entrance. I have very little experience with frames placed the warm way. When a hives population is small 8 to 16 thousand bees, the bees tend to cluster and raise the brood closer to the entrance. It is not until the bee population can fill the entire super that you find the full laid end to end of the frames.

Apis I swear I think I learn something from everyone of your posts.  The more I learn the better I understand each of your posts.  I always think of the Delaplane quote about the horizon on Lazy's website.  I'm going to spend the rest of the day thinking about making a bottom board so I can try out this on a hive or two.

Frames are oriented the same as a 10-frame hive.
