hello from Georgia
« on: February 01, 2014, 11:18:12 am »
Hi all.  I've retired (once from the military once for the local Power Plant) and now hve time for hobbies.

I have selected gardening, bees, hunting, and riding my Goldwing trike.  I am in the process of building a htbh and a Warre at present and have bees ordered with an expected pick up May 20th.

I'm sure I will have a lot of questions very soon.  Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to our friendly part of the beekeeping community.
This may be the year that I actually give a TBH a try as well. They look easier on the back.  ;D
Have fun here.

Welcome to the forum.  We hope we'll have answers to your questions.  The trouble starts when you get different answers to the same question---then what?
You're in for an educational experience.  Your biggest teacher will be hands on experience.  Try to find a nearby beekeeper who will be willing to personally share some of his/her experience with you.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I spent the afternoon cutting out my Warre hive and began putting it together. I'll finish it the first of the week and paint it. Then I'll finish putting the hTBH together. The weather finally reached the low 50's here so I could get out and do some work.

I guess I'll be the one to ask  :-[.
I've heard of TBH's, and KTBH's, but what's a  hTBH?

Welcome and enjoy your stay!  :)

I was an operator at a nuclear power plant for 15 years and am currently an operator at a coal-fired plant for a major power producer in the Tennessee Valley.   ;)

I wish I could retire!   :'(  (maybe they'll pull my Powerball numbers tonight)

Thanks for all the welcomes. hTBH is simply a horizontal top bar hive. My version is the Kenyan also. The Warre is a vertical top bar hive. I just finished one of each and am now waiting for  bees. My package will be in late May. Maybe I can get hold of a swarm before then.

Welcome jjode,

Milledgeville does not look too far from you. There is a fella there by the name of John Pluta. When I first got into bees a fews years ago I had no mentor and I was not on a nice forum like this one. John Pluta has many beekeeping videos out on YouTube. I learned a lot from him via Youtube. I even stopped by and saw him on the way back from Florida a few years ago. I have since learned a few more things that don't necessarily jive with the way he does business but thats OK. We each do things the way we think best and he makes a lot of money doing what he does.
If your ever in his area you might enjoy a short visit with him.

Boiler Jim, thanks for the tip about John Pluta. Some interesting stuff there, and he's only a short  trike ride from my location! The fatbeeman isn't that far either.

John Pluta is definitely on my to do list!  He makes me laugh.  I was watching a video of his about a cutout.  He said everybody ought to do at least one cutout, so when someone asks you to do one for them, you won't just say no, you'll say hot NO!
