I had a customer who buys honey in 30 lb pails call today and he and his wife met me at the honey house. I gave them a tour and then let them fill their own 2 pails out of the bottling tank.
We yakked for a while and then as they were leaving Jerome gave me a box and said he wanted me to have it.
I opened it up and this is what was inside!

There was even a funky old catalogue.

Books on how to beekeep when beekeeping was easy. Nice that they passed them on rather than recycling them as to what happens to a lot of books now.
Beckie and I are more interested in the publication date - edition #. It speaks so much to the original owner and the time and era that he kept bees.

It looks like you hit the jackpot. Things like that turn people into more than just customers. Next time he comes, you might want to give hime a special discount---after all, he did the "work" of filling the pails and earned his salary.

I think waaaay back Jerome must have thought about getting into beekeeping but never did. Over time he slowly acquired a lot of these books and simply handed them to me. I see a bottle of mead in his future.

I'll bet none of those books mention Varroa or SHB----Ahhh, the bliss of beekeeping in "the good old days"

I'll take that bet. there is one The Beekeepers Handbook But only because it is a 4th edition copy. In the original first printing in 1973 Varroa, Tracheal, African Bees, CCD, and all the drugs and chemicals used to treat them was still some other country's problem. Edition 4 was published in May 2011.

as keith said! the beekeeper's handbook, (updated frequently) great book! .......i have a copy of the 2nd (published 1986) and 3rd edition (3rd edition 1998)..........can't find the 2nd edition.........lol, probably lent it out and never got it back! anyway, it does discuss varroa, parasitic mite syndrome, trachael mites, ahb and small hive beetle as well as many other pests and diseases and treatment. this is a great manual on keeping bees for anyone starting out or looking for some extra info! (updated versions).

ef, like perry said, unfortunately i don't think so............

it's a challenge anymore to keep bees, and the challenges are sometimes overwhelming. mites, pests, diseases, rotating frames, queen issues, overwintering issues.......my list goes on and on.......but you know what, not going to give up! i just roll with it as everyone else does and enjoy the bees!

I know you would never sell any of the books but the ABCXYZ of Bee Culture is worth a very tidy sum considering the condition and copyright date. My eyes lit up when I saw that cover. What an amazingly thoughtful gift. Karma is a wonderful thing!

How do you know how old it is? Perry hasn't posted the edition number and publishing date yet for Beckie and my amusement.

4th Edition, published 20011.
I am part way into it but am puzzled by some of the temperature data/bee activity they have. Some of it seems very wrong to me.
