And I know some of those books are older than that. those old books don't come around that often so when so many show up at one time and in one place you have to suspect that they came from an old timer beekeeper that has past them on.
Which is the oldest? Is it "A Years Work in an Out Apiary" published by AI Root? 1908

like keith said, the old beekeeping books when you find them are great treasures! there is a great deal of history and info on keeping bees to glean info from! and like he said, i am envious perry!

the earliest book i have i think, is a copy of ABC XYZ OF BEE CULTURE; from 1908. the beekeepers name is printed inside on the 2nd page in fountain pen like this in old writing;

There are 3 pages of notes on the inside of the A.I.Root book as well. Two of them are fastened by postage stamp edges.

Here is some of the information regarding temps that I'm not so sure I agree with.

Surprising for such a recent edition.

Thanks Perry, I know Beckie and I are excited for you as well as jealous of you. It took long enough to get you to post the publication dates, Only hinted about it on posts, 3, 9, 18, 20, and 22. Great addition to any beekeepers Library. Those books were written by some of the fathers of modern beekeeping. They pioneered the techniques, practices and some of the equipment that we still use today. Some of those authors didn't just write one book but published many books relating to specific facets of beekeeping.

the beekeepers handbook...........what info do you disagree with on the temps perry? i think it's pretty generalized but think in the ball park ?

The confusing part is that some of the temps stated are ambient temp in the hive around the cluster. Others are ambient temps outside the hive and yet some are center brood cluster temps and then there are ones that are for the temp of the actual clustering bees.

Right side of scale, from "queens does not fly", down to "workers cannot fly". I am skeptical of those 4 listings .
I have been led to believe queens will fly at 15 C, and certainly workers fly all the time when temps are less than 10 C.

Workers will fly at temps less than 10 C but for only short durations as they can not maintain their body heat to sustain long flight for foraging.
The cluster forming 14 C is about wright, the difference between the bees staying loose in the hive when it is warmer and the bees using their bodies to insulate against the cold, to keep the brood area at brood temp. As the temp drops the outer cluster will get denser and more defined with the bees needing to be in the cluster for their own individual survival.
The queen and drone temps Their is temps that thy can fly at for short orientation flights and then temps that they will fly for longer mating flights. I know that cool weather while trying to get queens mated effects the rate of supersedure of the queens later on. But I will consede that these are optimal temps for good mating to occur. Not a temperature that you can have marginal success and end up with a poorly mated queen.
For mating you want the drones hanging out in drone congregating areas waiting for a queens.
I Don't disagree much with the numbers but they are not explained very well. Bees will adapted to their situation and the climate they are in by taking cleansing flights when the out side temp is to cold, queens taking desperation mating flights that results in poor mating.

I am up here in Maine at the moment. Wife has her whip out and is making me work SO HARD! Upstairs floor is done, got about half the tin up on the ceiling, the insulation and walls up and the paneling ion the walls, and the roller style barn door on the bedroom, and the closet wall built and all the paneling on that... i tried to put trim up but she made me split and haul wood up to the back porch, Oh and i refinished her old maple table for her, all stripped and sanded and re urethaned... Built her new steps going upstairs and took down the metal spiral steps... Oh yeah, i had to paddle the canoe while she fished... oh did I mention she makes me drive her around? In teh boat out on the ocean, and then in the new Slingshot SLR too!
I would share pics but cant figure out how to get them from phone to the computer. :(

AHA!

New steps new floor new tin.

On the Lobstah boat! bandin claws and YES, drinking rum and coke!

New wall and new door for the upstairs bedroom!

The pile of wood i had to split by hand! Ignore the tire tracks that wood wasnt dumped there by a dump trailer hooked to a pickup! Now I have to load it all on the porch... BY HAND!

My wife forcing me to drive her around on the ocean!!!

AND.. what I am FORCED to drive her around in on land! Oh she is so mean! heheheheh
OH, and... if Perry gets mad I hijacked please move this post! I should have started a new one! But then maybe he would REALLY want to marry me... I Dunno Perry are the benefits as good?

PS, that last pic with our new Slingshot is on Reach road. The point of land behind me is where Dan Fogelburg's house is, and he wrote his song The Reach about this place. Good pics of the Reach and the bridge we had to cross to get to it in the vid.
