Uncle Harvey
« on: August 24, 2017, 09:16:51 pm »
Is coming for a visit.

He's windy, sloppy, and will leave a huge mess.

Very temperamental, Harvey is likely to throw a fit, ripping out wires and tossing my electronics around.

I am expecting him to arrive in the middle of the night tomorrow night. When he gets here, I'll probably be off line for one to three days.

We've been to the store and stocked a few extra supplies to help us get through his visit. Tomorrow, I'll board up some windows, just so the neighbors don't stare.

Actually, some of our neighbors have heard about Uncle Harvey's visit, and decided they didn't want to put up with his blow-hard ways, so they've left town.

Jokes aside, what RB said. I grew up in New Orleans and we tended to take hurricanes in stride but they can be deadly.

The rains have started (3/4" in the last 8 hours), and the winds are hanging in there at around 10 to 15 mph.

The ditch in the front hasn't filled yet, and so far, just like a regular tropical storm.

I've got the windows in the front boarded up and everything in the back battened down.  Now we watch the weather on TV (no cable in our house), and wait for the electricity to fail.

Thanks all. It wasn't until after I posted the pics and took a second look that I realized my bird / bee bath needed to be taken apart and laid down.

News says winds around 20 mph now. We've got a bit over 1" of rain. Expected landfall in my old hometown of Aransas Pass as Category 3 hurricane with peak wind close to my hous expected to be around 90 ... better than the earlier predictions of 120.

Winds have picked up a bit more, but the shocking news is 3 feet, 36 inches, of rain between now and Tuesday evening!

And 40" South of us.

Wish I'd got my kayak back from my son.

Look at POLYGAL. Window coverings for uncle Harvey and all his kin. Found it this week at a NC Museum on the waterfront. They use a aluminum channel and slide it in place and screw endcap on each window takes 30 seconds to make ready.

I looked at a lot of things when we lived in Aransas Pass, and for my office in Rockport.  Anything beyond plywood was out of our price range.  Plywood isn't a bad choice, as long as you have your window coverings made up in advance.

The house we owned in AP had 52 windows, was built in 1920 from lumber recycled after the 1919 storm.  I made about four window covering for that house, and gave up.  Just no way to effectively do that job by myself, not just because of the number of windows, but because of the way the windows were made.

I hadn't mad coverings for our current home, simply because I didn't think we'd get hurricane force winds this far inland.  One of the previous owners must have made window coverings, because I found the holes in the brick.  But a later owner must have mistaken the window coverings for scrap lumber.  I suspect he built himself a deer blind.

After this storm, I'll make better coverings at my leisure and label each one so I'll know where to put it.  I'll also go from screws in brick to spring clips, and I'll even cut a few peep holes in the plywood.  For now, I think we are as safe as we can be.  The neighbors are really good at keeping debris picked up.  The only flying objects 3Reds is worried about are the two Port-A-Potties on the property behind our house.  A new home is going up where we used to watch deer and horses.

Yes, stilts.  I'm pretty sure the water would just pour in over the tops of my waders, once all the raining is done.

I'm still waiting for "real" electricity, but I've got a generator, and now have my computer hooked up.

Here's a video I shot while Uncle Harvey was visiting us, Round 1:

And a little later in the day, from the garage:

Remember the Before Pics?

Here's After:

I guess, I should say "After the First Day."

We still have gusty winds, and showers.  But nothing like Saturday.  I got over 23" of rain through my Accurite Weather Station.  I don't know if was really Accu - right, but someone else told me Victoria airport collected 15".  So, close enough to be believable.

We are lucky that we haven't had any flooding.

The hives survived, and I've seen the bees flying in and out between showers.

Lots of dead birds in our yard.

Had some small birds enter via the doggy door.  Like an evil landlord my dachshunds and I chased them out through the front door and back into the storm.

Still no electricity.  We've got a trickle of water.  We are not on city water.  There's a guy who owns the wells and sells water to all of us in our little subdivision.  He's maintained a generator running one pump, thus, the trickle.  No one knows if it is drinkable, so everyone out here is drinking bottled water.

Only two gas stations were available yesterday, and they ran out before I could refill my gas cans for the generator.  Today, there are more gas stations.  The local grocery store is open, but nothing is available that requires refrigeration.  They should have that restocked tomorrow.  The city of Victoria is on a Boil Water advisory, so no baked goods, fresh meats, or anything else that requires sanitation in preparation.

The low lying areas close to the Guadalupe river are in for deluge, probably starting tomorrow, as the river rises well above flood stage.

3Reds are getting by, trying to bring back what comforts of home we can.  I've been wet for three days, and I'm ready to be dry.  The TV antenna is gone, and we haven't had cable or satellite for several years.  So, information has been hard to come by.
