Spring Mite Treatments
« on: March 25, 2020, 04:59:18 pm »
Anyone doing spring mite treatments?  Or spring mite tests?

During my hive checks today, I dug deep into one strong colony that had mites in the drone brood.  As mites go, they will bring down the strongest colonies the hardest.  This colony had brood in both deeps two weeks ago when I reversed brood boxes.  I left this one alone so as not to break up the brood.  In my check today, I still found brood in both boxes and mites in with the drone pupae.  I put Formic Pro on all those colonies.  In 14 days I will do a mite test to see where they are at.  I hope to split this colony, eventually.

We started Apigaurd two weeks ago.  We put the second dose in the hives Monday, and will let it sit in there for another four weeks.

Doing great, Lazy.
I am in the process of making splits.  I got some hives that are bursting at the seams!  We now have access to queens.

Does Apiguard kill bees?  It certainly seemed to make them aggressive, and I've lost two queens in one hive.

I've used Apiguard a handful of times and have not had any problems. I try to rotate miticides so they won't build up tolerance.  I suppose, with any mite treatment, there is a risk of queen mortality.

Umm, except for OA.. no chance of harm to the queen or bees, doesnt make them aggressive, or seem to bother them at all, but it does kill mites!   Liquid treatments not withstanding.. talking about vaporizing OA.   ;D

   edit...
I've never used apiguard.. I have used hopguard, hopguard 1 and hopguard 2, never tried hopguard 3 or anything else..  An english keep turned me toward vaporizing OA before it was legal to use, and I have used it ever since.  sorry I can't be more help...
