Glorious Day, First Peek and Failed Fondant
« on: February 16, 2014, 08:01:33 pm »
Crazy weather in Northern Utah. It's reached 55* F the last two days and the bees in one hive are actively flying, basking in the sun and dumping dead bodies. The other colonies were out but not like the one. All 4 hives are getting a little light (weight-wise) and the warm weather won't help. But I got to peek into all of them and I found good numbers in each. The center frames were mostly consumed with a couple of frames of capped honey on the outer edges. Bees sounded very happy as they were buzzing around, soaking in the sun and landing on my bare head, neck and ears to check me out. I was in my element! ;D

Made my first ever fondant patties and they came out very gloppy (American slang for"too moist" :D). So I had to spread it on some cheese cloth overnight and let the water weep out. So two hives have some feed and I'll take care of the rest tomorrow. My fondant for two hives: 2.5 cups water, two heaping tablespoons white corn syrup and 9 cups (4.5 lb) sugar. I tried to double a YouTube recipe: 25 g glucose, 300 ml water and 1 kilo sugar. I've either got to reduce the water or cook it a bit longer. What do you think?

Also, why would one hive be so much more active than the others?  They all get equal sun. Does one colony become more active if they sense food storage is getting low?

Each hive has it's own personality. I have hives side by side, some will get started foraging an hour or more before the next one, go figure. :-\
Actually, I am glad to hear your overwintering to date has been successful. When I first read the title failed fondant, I thought "Oh no".

Good deal!!  Glad to hear its going well!
My first (and only) attempt at candy board still has the spoon stuck in it somewhere down on the bottom where I tossed it..  its still there, unaffected by the elements..   I shot it once with the .22, bullet bounced off, and I swear it growled at me..

I reduced water by 1/2 cup and cooked it just a tad bit longer after reaching the "soft ball" temperature. This resulted in a much better, if still a bit too moist, patty. Nest one I'm going to cook it another minute or two.

Here's a pic of the bees in one colony consuming the fondant I made. It appears that 3 of 4 hives are eating it. This was the best view of the bees.

Thanks, Perry. 2 cups (473 ml) water, 2 heaping tablespoons (50 g) white corn syrup and 9 cups (about 2 kg) sugar. Water heated to slow boil, then corn syryp dissolved into the water and lastly sugar added. Bring to steady boil until mixture reaches soft ball temp on candy thermometer. Maintain heat and drop test into cold water until you actually get a soft ball. Take mixture off heat and place pan in cold water. Stir mixture until it cools into a cake. Makes enough for two soft fondant cakes.
