Late season Beginners class

This year our local bee club decided to try adding a repeated Beginning Beekeeping class a little later in the season.  It was timed so that it would coincide with packaged bee deliveries.  The first class was given at the end of January.  The repeat will be 3 Monday nights in a row with the first class held last night.  Anyone who attended the first class in January could repeat it again for free and our club scholarship students could attend for free as well.  We simple took the schedule from January and broke it down over three evenings.  We had at least 3 repeaters from the first class and one scholarship student along with about 25 registered people. 

This class got an opportunity to observe package installation done by 4 different methods.  Our committee chair is demonstrating the 4 methods in this picture.






The newly installed bees will go to an agro tourism farm that is about 1 mile away.  Our club is establishing a teaching apiary there with the help of a grant from the Great Plains Master Beekeeping Program.  The timing worked well for this group of potential beekeepers.  The cool evening temperatures made for easy installations without a lot of bees taking to the air.

Very cool @Bakersdozen!!!  Did you get any new members for your local association out of it?

I am currently at our beekeeping 102 class... We have 31 new beekeepers today covering topics needed for seasonal keeping up to prepping for winter and harvesting (Our 103 class in August).
We will have a hive inspection demonstration right after lunch,as we keep two teaching hive on site here at the nature preserve.



We had a member make the cutest cookies as well!

Registering for an event automatically makes one a member for the remainder of the calendar year with out bee club.
Looks like you have a good crowd there!
Zweefer we just established a teaching apiary with our club.  We received grant money from the Great Plains Master Beekeeping program.  Do you have guidelines established regarding your teaching hives?  We are in the planning stages of working this program into our constitution with a manager, teachers, storage, teaching sessions, etc.  We kind of put the cart before the horse.  We took the grant money, found a location near our meeting location, and set up four colonies.  Now we concern ourselves with the details.
