I hope you had a total of 10 frames in the box. If not, they will draw comb from the lid. They hate frames and will use any empty space for natural comb before using frames.

In the box with the gourd I didn't have room but for 3 frames with the gourd. They never did anything except fly around the screened inner cover when I took the top cover off. The box they are in now has a full box of 10 frames with 3 or 4 already drawn comb and one at least half full of honey and stores.

I hope to take some pictures of the gourd and post them later. I can see a Purple Marten wing inside they built around.

One thing that these picture show me is that in a place where space was at a premium, the bees didn't observe the bee space which all the books teach is sacred. Bees know what is best to do in whatever space they choose to use I reckon.
