Rabies?
« on: June 08, 2014, 01:53:05 pm »
I was getting dressed for church this morning when my 84 year old MIL called to say there was a big "cat" staggering around and falling in her yard (we have a trailer that she lives in beside us).  She is almost blind from glaucoma and I figured it was an old dog of ours that is on it's last legs and stumbling around pretty badly now.  Anyhow, I head walk over to her yard and there's a raccoon sitting on it's hind quarters and snapping it's head/mouth from side to side and losing it's balance all along.  It didn't acknowledge my presence.  I slipped back to the house and grabbed my armadillo gun, went back and made a body shot on the coon.

Ok, what now?  I couldn't figure out who to call...you know, the "report animals acting strangely, etc.," mantra that the health department sing.  Funny thing is there's nothing in the phonebook about where to call.  I called the sheriff, he told me to call the local vet that does the rabies clinic.  She told me to put it on ice and carry it to the health department tomorrow, but she couldn't tell me the health officials name to talk to.  Ok, so is rabies *really* NOT that big of a deal??  You betcha it's a big deal!!!!  My daughter went through a rabies shot series in the last year or so.  You don't get a second chance with rabies...you get the disease, well, tell your loved ones bye and settle up with your enemies 'cause you ain't going to be around much longer.

Anyhow, I found our state of Alabama rabies page and followed the instructions.  I sprayed the coon with bug spray per the instructions..."Ticks and fleas are a problem for the analyst during autopsy.". The coon is packed in a cooler inside a couple of garbage bags with 20# of ice around it.

I found a number on the state website and called it.  An operator answered and told me someone would be calling me back, which they did in a timely manner! :)  I just got off the phone with the guy from the State Health Dept in Montgomery.  Baically, he said, if it was in my area and I think it was rabies...it was rabies.  :-\  Apparently the budget crunch has got to them and he stated the lab doesn't like testing unless there has been exposure to other animals or humans.  The coon is in a white styrofoam cooler with "Rabies Specimen" written on all sides (per state instructions) in red magic marker...I think when I walk in with it they will accomodate me...folks will probably let me to the front of the line.  ;D

After dealing with a few cases I don't make the calls anymore. Shoot and carry (with old gloves) to one of the many brush piles I usually have nearby. Apply lighter..  Throw gloves on fire and walk away..
Some folks dispose of them in refuse piles or in distant ditches.. I don't like to leave the carcass accessible to other animals that could contract the disease, so try to burn them quickly.    NOT a disease I like to take chances with.
I onc eshot a skunk trying to get into my kennels when we lived in Maine..   I was a bit worried about discharging a firearm in the city limits, but no one even questioned it and I ended up on the news. That one was tested positive for Rabies. I shot two more, made the calls and was told to dispose of them myself. OR I could pay to have them disposed of...    Ummm... no.
Back out here in the midwest the attitude is even more relaxed...
"Yeah?  You sure it has Rabies?"
"Pretty sure. Not often a coon staggers into my yard in the middle of the day."
   "OK, thanks for the report."
"What do you want me to do with it?"
"I don't care. Bury it or burn it."

So now I don't even call anymore.
Shot a skunk flopping around in my lower field last week.
Distributing bees at Tim Wilbanks house a few weeks ago.. went to leave... and there by my trailer was the classic rabid coon.. falling down, staring at us with no fear...   I yelled at Tim.. he grabbed his .22 and ended the situation, then disposed of it to keep it away from his kids and critters.   Happens more often than is known by most folks.

Yup. Me and feral cats ~ We had a crazy cat lady in the neighborhood, 50 untamed cats. The whole court smelled of cat pee. No need to go into details ~

Lazy, what you describe sounds much similar to the way it is around here.  Common sense ways.

We've lived here for the last 25 years and this is the first raccoon that I've seen.  I'm sure they're around but I've never seen one.  Deer, turkey, fox, possum, snapping turtles, coyotes, etc.,. but the first coon.  You're right, though, there's nothing to be done whether it is rabid or not...except....my wife will know one way or the other. ;)

I'll let the state get rid of this one for me. ;)

When dealing with rabid animals or other dangerous situations, just remember, when seconds count, help is only minutes away!

killing rabid animals is the way to go, but I would still call the authorities.  Rabies isn't anything to trifle with.  You don't know if you are infected until there are signs and once there are signs it is too late.  So by all means kill them, but I'll wait for someone else to cart it away.

We had one local family take in a stray kitten.  Turns out the kitten had rabies, nobody knew.  Of to get a round of shots for the lot of them.

My dog killed one a few years ago.  My wife moved and one of our barn help handled the dog and got blood and saliva on them.  Booster shots for my dog and 45 day quarantine indoors on our property, and a series of shots for my Mrs. and the girl that helped her.  Up here anyway they were very quick to respond and the Dept of health covers the cost of the shots.

I have learned to hate coon's, being a truck gardener that plants a few acres of sweet corn every year and have to work half a day to put up a 4 strand elec. fence just to keep them out.  >:( I also set live traps and catch between 15 to 20 coons a year during the sweet corn harvest which i introduce to Mr. Remington. I have seen them acting strange in the daytime and called the Dept. of Conservation and they said it was probably distemper? I didn't want to take a chance of it not being distemper and shot it, if i knew for sure it was distemper i would have left it alone and let it spread it to other coons. Like i said, i Hate coons. It's not much consolation but around here coons get distemper and it is just about impossible to tell the difference from rabies except that the animal may be quite wet and sluggish/sleepy.  If it looks remotely like rabies, treat it like rabies.  If it is distemper, the coon has spread the disease just about as far as it is going to.  Kill and incinerate..

We have a small family of coons on the court. I never see them travel around, as a matter of fact I have never seen them, just told by the family that they live in a tree on the edge of their back yard. This family also has, I think, three cats that roam around the neighborhood, and around 12 kids. I'm nervous about those coons being in the neighborhood. Is it safe?

The short answer is, "No".  Especially where children are out and about playing.  Raccoons carry Baylisascaris, which they distribute with their scat.  It can cause Raccoon Roundworm Encephalitis in humans.

Educational thread. We usually live trap and relocate coons that are stealing koi, but not a lot of rabies in Dallas city limits either.

The United States of America is a great nation, I can't think of any other country that I would pick to live in other than this one.  Having said that...the bulk of the government stinks.  I was about ready to dump the coon cooler in a dumpster and be done with it I was so aggravated earlier.  I even thought about carefully setting the cooler (which had "RABIES SPECIMEN" written on all sides as instructed by the State of Alabama Health Department's website) on a traffic island at a high-traffic intersection and see if they sent in hazmat teams or something to secure it.<sigh>

I arrived early this morning at the county health department.  I explain to the ladies what I have, what I've done to secure it (ice, insecticide, double-bagging, etc.,). While I'm talking with one lady another is calling "the boss" who is out of town.  He wants to talk to me.  Upon talking with him I instantly get the impression from him that he doesn't want to fool with me nor the coon.  He tells me that I need to take it to the local vet to have it's head removed.  I tell him that the "Rabies Specimen Acceptance Criteria" as written on the State's website says that anything under 24 inches and less than 20 pounds can be sent in with the body entact.  His response..."You might have found something official but I've been doing this for twenty five years!  Only the head is sent in, never the entire animal.".  Oh, and he re-iterated the 25-year thing again.  Huh???  Seems like in twenty five years he might have read the rules.  >:(   Anyhow, I tell him I'll see what I can do about getting it to the vet.  Btw, this is the same vet that yesterday told me to carry the coon to the health department.  ???  By now, my aggravation meter is rising.

Ok, I drive to the vet's office but she's not there so I talk with her assistant.  First thing is she is dumbfounded as to why the health department sent me to them.  She says that unless it's a really big dog they usually don't severe the heads...that they didn't have to unless they were of a certain size".  This last information, she said, was communicated to them from the top guy at the county health department...the same guy that sent me to the vet.  From what I gathered from her it sounded like they (the vet office) do send in specimens but normally from situations that they are actively involved in, not as a state drop-off location for rabies specimens.   Wait a minute...he told the vet that they will accept bodies of a certain size, but he tells me that no bodies are accepted...only heads.  ???  I thank the vet's assistant for her information and leave with the "Chilly Coon from Crenshaw County" and go to my office and it sits in my jeep for a while...though it's not looking out the window and no one is coming up wanting to know if they can pet it. (Ok, some sick humor....).

The health department had my name and number and about thirty minutes later the phone rang.  It was a woman, who the best I could understand was the supervisor for the guy at the health department.  I could tell she was on a speakerphone and when I told her there was a bad echo she apologized and said she was on a speakerphone so "everyone could hear".  She was nice enough and apologized for aggravation and frustration.  She told me to bring the coon back to the health department but asked me pour the ice and water out of the cooler so as not to contaminate the workers down there.  They would put it in their refrigerator.  Wait a minute...the state protocol was to ice the specimen down but now I've got to remove it from the ice so the employees aren't contaminated...I guess since I've already been messing with it I'm probably immune or something. >:(   She went on to tell me that the vet would've charged something like $10 to cut the head off which I would have had to pay for...but since they were going to take care of it for me that it wouldn't cost me anything.

The coon was delivered and I should hear back Wednesday or Thursday.

After I got back to the office I called the bet back and asked how much they would charge to cut the coon's head off.  The assistant really didn't know and said I'd have to check with her boss.  I asked her if it would be $10.  She quickly said it would be WAY MORE THAN THAT!!!  ...which is what I figured.  I mean, I'm not going to be hacking on a possibly rabid coon for $10....just the sterile/safety attire would run more than that.<sheese>

I have no idea if all of this makes sense or if I'm just squalling like a little girl that just got dumped by her beau.

Aggravated?  Frustrated?  Yelp. Yelp.  Wondering why so many people are hacked off with our government these days?  Nope.

Ed

I feel your pain buddy..  thats why I posted earlier.  You try to do the right thing you "somehow" end up paying, either through the wallet or with a bad attitude and a headache.   Even the local police will do a quick look around and whisper loudly..   Get that thing out of here, go burn it!
In Perry's cae.. saving the cat, at least he was doing something humane..  With a rabid critter the humane stops when the bullet does.

Yeah, next time will get played out a bit differently.  I haven't been impressed with "system" this go'round.

I have to correct something I mentioned earlier.  I said that I haven't seen a raccoon around the place in the 25 years that we have lived here.  That is actually 50+ years that I haven't seen one being as I grew up a quarter of a mile down the road and use to hunt, fish, and camp through the woods behind the house.  It's strange that the first one I see is most likely rabid.<sigh>
