Branding/Redesigning My Honey Label
« on: November 08, 2014, 05:16:25 pm »
i just started working with a graphics designer who is going to re-design my honey labels, design a lip balm label, and potentially help me with my website.

the name of my company is 'Rush River Honey Company', the name on my label currently is 'Rush River Gold' (wildflower honey).  (after the river and where i keep my bees). i designed my own label, print it off on card stock, and hand cut the labels to look like gift tags that i tie around the jar with either a hemp twine and/or colored raffia and wire ribbon.  it's tedious and a great deal of work hand cutting tags and it's getting old.  i want a label i can order in sheets, peel them off and stick them on my jars.

the designer asked if i had ever considered changing the name from 'Rush River Gold' to 'Riverbees Gold'.  she said she thought 'Riverbees Gold is very 'memorable' and 'catchy'. i had thought of this at one time but didn't want to be a 'ulee's gold'.... :D.....but what do i know?

i told her i would think about this suggestion, and i would run it past a 'panel of experts' that i know....
you all are my panel of experts! ............. :D

please, everyone jump in here and vote in the poll as to what you would go with, don't be shy. also  when you vote, please post in the thread any thoughts, insights, or opinions you have or why you would choose one or the other.  i would truly appreciate your insight and your views on changing my label name.  what do you all think?

i look forward to the replies and most of all thank you in advance!

I  like the "rush river gold" makes you think of images in your mind of riverbee out panning for gold to get honey. :)

rush river gold

It just rolls off the tongue smoother.

Rush River Gold.  If you did do River bees at least make it 2 words, that pause changes things. But really Rush River Gold is perfect, your trademark, just fits

I'm going to go along with Rush River Gold.
My reasons are two fold.
# 1 - it just sounds smooth.
# 2 - This may not apply to you, but it was brought to my attention after I chose my "name". Brandt's Bees sounds a lot like Burts Bees, but I don't really care, my name is my name. But, if I ever get old and my son decides not to carry on with the "biz", the ability to sell is reduced because of the name. A "generic" name could be kept by any potential buyer, so goodwill could factor into the price. On the other hand, I like to think of it as being willing to put my name on it (which ipresents another problem if somebody decides to sue the company).
Lots to think about! :)

For me, simpler is better.  If you live on the Rush River, local people will easily incorporate the "Gold" into their language to make Rush River Gold, a simple addition to what they already know.

I have to say too, that I like Gypsi's suggestion of River Bee's Gold.

This is a proof of one of the labels I used this year, note how simple it is:

Customers liked the label.

I used a label that I called my honey Bee rancher pure honey.  HAd very nice art work. To nice I had a lot of people ask where I bought my processed honey at. When I asked why they would think the honey came from a processor they would always say the label was pointing them in that direction. SO on honey labels I like to follow the KISS rule.

Keep

It

Simple

I've been trying on these names for a couple of hours now... I think I like Rush River Honey,  drop 'company'. It has a lovely ring to it, and it also says that it's local honey  ;)

thanks for the replies!  i knew i could ask here and receive the best of our collective minds as beekeepers to help me decide!  KEEP THEM COMING!

to the poll i have added gypsi's suggestion of 'River Bees Honey'.  the poll allows for one to change their vote if you would like. i didn't add jen's suggestion of 'Rush River Honey'......i will get to that and why jen.

perry thanks and you guys, i am not quite sure what 'smooth' means other than what iddee said about 'rolling off the tongue', i get that. perry you are right on about the 'name', will get to that.

lee, awesome label, this is how i want mine, SIMPLE, elegant and attractive/eye catching as yours is.

now to jen:
"I think I like Rush River Honey,  drop 'company'. It has a lovely ring to it, and it also says that it's local honey".

this is the name of my company.....'Rush River Honey Company', rather than Rush River Apiaries or Rush River Honey Farm. this name appears on any correspondence or invoices/billing thank you letters and a business card.  a little history and maybe some advice about 'branding' your honey and some legalities.

when we purchased the river property, i moved my bees there and expanded. i wanted to stand out from anyone else locally, capitalize on it and protect any labeling going forward, so that others could not copy or infringe on my label. the rush river is a very popular trout stream in wisconsin. we get fishers from all over the midwest that come to fish this river, of course locals, and a great deal of tourist traffic now because of an unprecedented outdoor restaurant. (not zoned for this).

i went to great effort to register my business name,  trademark and trade name, and a slogan at the state and federal level and copyright a logo.  in order to trademark a name, one cannot trademark a generic name, or in my case, the name of a specific body of water, the rush river. one cannot trademark this and protect it. so saying 'rush river honey' would  give me absolutely no recourse or protection for anyone else that came along and named their honey that, (and they did). BUT, if i give something specific other than 'honey' after 'rush river', (like rush river gold) that changes the protection, and gives me a legal 'baseball bat' to go after anyone who decides to label their honey 'similar' to mine, even if it is only 'rush river honey'. same for the name of my company. if anyone decides they want to call themselves Rush River Honey Farm or Rush River Apiaries, i have the legal protection to keep them from doing so, if it is similar to mine, or would confuse a customer. in short, it is referred to as 'intellectual property rights'. no one can copy or come close to what i have registered and trademarked, and also, so as not to confuse customers.  hope i made some sense?  it was a very smart thing for me to do.

one of my neighbors decided to start keeping bees.  he labeled his honey as 'Rush River Honey' and 'Rush River Honey Farm' and was selling in some local stores and the illegal outdoor restaurant.
another beek who doesn't even live on the river, examined my label.  one month later he was advertising 'Rush River Honey', labeled as such, and selling it at farmers markets.
another unsavory beek purchased a domain name similar to my company name.

these folks were all sent essentially 'cease and desist' letters by certified mail and then some.  ;D

some of us are smaller and don't care about this, but i do.  i have worked too hard to build my small business and i don't have time for those that want to piggyback on what i have capitalized on and created.  don't mean to sound like a jerk, but it's amazing to me what folks do when they see your success and copy your hard work.

i enjoy the replies, keep thoughts and votes coming, sorry i was long winded.....

Hey you know what Riv, I reread my post and I meant to say Rush River Gold, just so you know. And I like this thread because next year my three hives are going to pour forth barrels of honey and I'm looking my own label as well. Good stuff here, still reading it  :)

The name may be insignificant.  Many years ago an old pal of mine told me "you can't hide a good restaurant."  In our area, this is a true statement.  It is not uncommon for us to drive an hour for our dinner meal.  That was my pals point.  A good restaurant will draw customer to it.  Maybe a good honey product is the same, and people will drive out of their way and pay a premium for the product.  A good honey by any name is still a good honey.

The above got my vote also.  R is one of the better sounding letters in our alphabet, and Rush River has a nice alliteration sound to it.  It's a smooth sound.

thanks jen and thank you lazy!

lazy, just a few comments about what you said earlier; some folks don't have a lot of honey to sell so the name 'branding' may be insignificant, but i think it is. we put our names on the honey we sell. we take pride in that.  even a good hidden restaurant has a 'name'. if like me, you have a unique area to capitalize on, use it. it works to one's advantage, that is my experience.  sometimes the beekeeper doesn't think  a 'name' is significant but it really is in my HO. customers will buy your honey for your name and who you are.  to me the name isn't insignificant, it's how one builds a business, or honey sales. i do think one has to stand out or be unique in some way and capture that attention so that folks buy my honey and go the extra mile to get it and pay whatever price i ask over others. hate to use this (kevin costner field of dreams)....but it is true..... build it, they will come.........you have to give them the reason to,  to be successful at it, i think i have.  is it because of the name? in part, maybe. i think there is more to it than that.   selling honey just isn't all about selling a jar of honey, or the name on the jar, it's also what's behind the jar of honey with our name on it....that's me, that's you, that's perry, jack, lee, yankee and everyone else here that sells honey and takes pride in doing so, and the character, personality and the hard work we do to get it to the final product and attention to detail to sell it to gain that customer base, and the name recognition behind it. really no different than any other business....... with one exception for me.........
i am retired, don't want a full time business and i make no money, i just break even every year, if that............... :D
