Our old house was brick, built in the 1820's and the bats LOVED that house.. I suppose they found ways into the brick walls, there were three layers of brick separated by a couple inches of airspace with bricks that tied the three "walls" together.. My wife hates two things. House centipedes, and Bats.. While neither bother me, when one or the other appeared, it became MY emergency.
Typically, I put on a welding glove and king konged the bat as it flew past. Stick out hand, catch bat, open door, let bat fly... Occasionally I would get irritated enough when I could not catch one that the tennis racket came out. Maybe 1 in ten bats got the tennis racket..
House centipedes probably loved that old house for the same reasons... Sitting watching TV one ran across the ceiling... Wife was sweeping and had the broom... She tried to hit the centipede, it fell from the ceiling.... onto the GLASS coffee table.... Yep, she was so fast, that the broom hit the table about the same time the centipede. the centipede didnt hurt the table, but the broom was fueled by adrenalin and an ear shattering SCREAM... Glass went everywhere, and the first thing she says is..... did I get it?
Thankfully, no bat or centipede problems in the new house.
