Riv- Three hives, each hive has one medium full of honey. I can't even budge them.

Yup! I put the first candy on January 1st, as a safeguard. They will have devoured two candy cakes in less than a month.

Jen- was the medium full of honey that you can't budge there when you put in the candy cake's?

This may be a newbie question, but come spring should you have any honey stores left in your hives? Do they eventually consume the stores that are left?

Hi Curt- Yes, all three hives had one medium full of honey at the end of Fall. I didn't feel confident to leave just the honey for them because when there is a warm spell, they will use up a lot of that honey. So for safeguarding, making sure that they never run out of stores, I added candy cakes on January 1st, so there would be food when the bees use up their stores into March. Or, in case the bees chimney straight up and don't use the stores on either side of the honey. Hope this makes sense  :)
