tec and Iddee and LazyBkpr are spot on. I give the same advice to any new folks that call and want bees for their new TBH set ups, or Warre, or whatever. I advise them to stick to basics for a year or two and then spread their wings in whatever direction they want. When you call me because you are having trouble with your TBH, I have next to no clue as how to help (emergency feed, etc.).
Just keep bees and try and keep them alive for a couple years, it will keep your hands full just doing that.

I tell new beekeepers that i mentor basically the same as iddee, to not jump in over there heads, buy only what you need to start with 2 hives, ( hive tool, smoker, and protection equipment)when they ask about buying bees, i tell them they can learn alot by starting with a nuc and a 3 lb. package, that i set my hives up (like iddee said,) except i like two deeps for brood in our area with a med super of stores for winter. 50 lbs. can usually get us through, but i feel better with closer to 80 lbs. I don't tell them what kind of foundation to start with, i just hand them a frame of wax and a frame of plastic and tell them to smell it, and ask, if you were a bee which one would you want in your house. :D No contest :laugh: the wax always win. :P Jack
