Water is rising.....
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:34:48 pm »
This bench is about 18 feet above the nominal water level.  Water has risen enough to get my attention.

Lee, I feel for you.  The "mother of all rains" is presently feeding your river.  It look like there will be three to five inches of rain in your watershed, and it will all be "run-off" water.  I'm off to my ranch tomorrow morning, as I fear some of my water-gates will be washed out.

Good luck.  You may have to get Chip or someone to help you move those bees.  I hope that isn't the case.

Yes, here on the Brazos we are on standby to move eight or ten hives.  That is assuming they don't float away first.  Lazy, Chip is on standby to help.  I just moved the two hives pictured because they were too aggressive around my new neighbors next door.  Its raining cats and dogs now.  :-)

The Brazos can rise quickly, that is for sure.  Had a customer whose creek that feeds the Brazos rose 8 feet above her pond (which was 10 feet above normal water level) last year, her fish are still stuck in my pond. If the weather ever dries out I may manage to get them home.

Have you heard from tec? I think he's right on the Brazos. I'm starting to worry about him.

There was generally some two to four inches west of Lee.  It all fell on super saturated ground.  It will all be "run-off" water.  I fear the Brazos and many other creeks and rivers is going way out of its banks.  All of the reservoirs and creeks were already bank full, and last nights additional water is going create massive flooding.  All of my properties are on high ground, but I am sure to have some fence damage on the ranch where the dry washes cross my property.

Hey, cattle prices are way up and all of us ranchers have more grass than we have seen in a decade.  In the end, the flood will be a blessing, but in the short haul it's going to be a pain in the butt to most of us.  The Lord gives, and the Lord takes, but we had to have our five year drought broken.

Lazy, we had 2.6 inches last night (about 28 inches so far this year).  Water is creeping up.  Iddee, tec is on high  ground on the banks of the Brazos.  When we spoke about it a couple years ago, high water episodes hadn't seriously threatened his home.  :-)

That water is JUST a bit too close for comfort!
We dont have nearly the problem you do, but both of my ponds went over the dams some time during the rainy night.  Weather like this keeps up I will have to put overflow pipes in.   Not that I am complaining after seeing yall's situation.

This morning's surprise....

Moved the gentle hives close to the house and left the mean bees to swim if necessary.

Here in Mo. we never had that much rain all at once, but did have over six foot of rain for the year a few years back. I have cousins in Texas, but are out of harms way for now  Keep on high ground,i was on the Mo. state water patrol for five years and have seen what high water can do. Jack

Hang in there Lee! Up here, Lake Texoma has just surpassed the all time record. It's now almost 5 feet deep going over the spillway and that's A LOT of water. Almost 28 feet above normal.  The rain is supposed to come to an end on Sunday, but by then, the damage has been done.

I sure do like your hive stand!

It's so scary how quickly those waters can rise and the force behind them.  They will knock a house off of it's foundation.

thanks for the pictures lee.
well wishes to you. amazing. our river floods out nearly every year, every spring, some years just crazy.  the house is out of the flood plain of the river, but the waters have come up to the back of a pole shed and near the gardens. the hives are out of harms way. the worst damage we ever had was from several years ago, when there was a quick warm up with snow on the ground, and the rains came. living in a valley, ridges behind us, farm fields above us, the water had no where to go but down.  (i posted a video on this somewhere here). the area around our house was a swimming pool, and  flooded the basement, the garage, and the gardens, and washed out the roadway and driveway, leaving deep craters.  the debris cleanup was was a pain, but i did find my lost flip flop that i was wearing while filming the video floating around in a pool in the roadway the next day...... :D
it brought a lot of trees down (high winds). after that, we spent some dollars on excavation down from the top to widen the natural flow of the water and near the house to divert any future water problems away from the house.  so far so good.
best wishes to you lee.

Lee has a beautiful home in a gorgeous setting.  His house sets high up on the hill, and from his back porch down the ground slopes over a 75 foot of so slope toward the river bottom.  His house is probably 30 feet above the flood water in the picture.  Most of his land is in the flat river bottom.  What we are seeing is a step up from the lowest bottom to a shelf.  Then his house is 30 or feet higher than the shelf.  His house will be OK, but those last two bee hives may get flooded.  All of our rivers and creeks are out of their banks.

Lee, like many other folks has a great view of the river all year long, and occasionally Mother Nature extolls a price on all who live and love the rivers.  If you purchase river property, you know it's going to happen.  When is the question?

It rained again this morning.  The forecast is for more rain this afternoon.  The drought is broken.  Good luck Lee.

My daughter bought a house down near Cedar Creek Lake last year and the water literally runs under her foundation making it to the lake. She is not at lake edge at all, a row of lakefront houses and a road in between. I am studying runoff management and foundation reinforcement so we can get her place better defended after the weather passes this time. So far so good.  I will look up your pics later Riverbee

Lee,
Sorry about the river rising. I am not a fan of living that close to water, or even swimming, some old fear....watch out for watersnakes.
