an update.  round 2 surgery coming for the right hip on february 1st.
i am going to draw a big smiley face on that r hip or maybe a simple fish figure (surgeon enjoys fishing) using a water based sharpie.......... :D
all the hoohah you have to do 4 days before surgery makes your head spin..........

december 20th was 6 months for me for the other one (left hip).  recovery has been a long haul. lot's of ups, downs, and challenges.  some not so funny stuff and then some funny stuff looking back.  4 months of no bending over; going up and down the stairs, picking stuff up off the floor, (dropping things is a real stinker) putting shoes and socks on, underwear really is overrated............ :D shaving my legs (electric razor tied around an extra curved handle with one of the compression socks that i hated to help with swelling), doing laundry, cooking, general household tasks, and driving.  going anywhere or doing anything takes longer.   getting those unused and cut mucscles back in shape. figured out how to get in my jeep wrangler in short order after about 5 or 6 weeks. i lifted myself in using the roll bar, fired her up and i rolled out of the garage into the driveway.  mr. rb came running out of the house....his eyes and expression (how'd you do that) met mine and i had a big grin on my face!    ;D
sometimes he would try to get a shoe on the wrong foot, so one day i wrote R and L in a sharpie marker on the tops of my feet (upside down to me, right side up to him)  using a stick with the sharpie taped on........
it took almost 3 months to get my blood levels back to normal; after the 2nd week post surgery, SOMEONE brought home a viral infection of the gi type, and lasted for 3 more weeks.  i had to go in twice to make sure the hardware didn't get infected because of the symptoms.  i lost 20 lbs between the surgery and infection........not unhappy about losing fat cells let me tell ya, but a hard way to lose them.  also put a blip in the radar on my injections, set me way back (will update my thread on this).

ditched crutches early on, hate them things; i used the walker, and graduated to two canes (now on one) because of the other hip.  my husbands legal assisstant lent me a 'rollator'.  this thing helped me in my walking routine everyday the distance i did (up to 2 miles) and carrying things in and out of the house and getting mail. rollators are  like a walker, but better.  big wheels to get around on most surfaces, a seat, and a storage basket underneath. brakes.  good on sidewalks, asphalt gravel, grass........although going up hill in grass especially if there are mole tunnels is a challenge.  without it i could never walk the distance i do.......but getting there.
recovery really does take 6 months or more for  this surgery in many ways.

the scar looks good.  amazing! will have another to match on the other side!  LOL!

the funniest story i can think of...........we went out to dinner some months back to a really nice restaurant on a monday evening.  i went to the ladies room, (handicap stall).  when i went to remove toilet paper, the ENTIRE dispenser came totally off the wall, and toilet paper rolling out as the thing fell to the floor.  seriously....... :D :D :D

the 2 or 3 toilet dispenser came off the wall and landed about 2 feet in front of me while i am sitting on the throne toilet paper rolling off........ :D :D :D

couldn't bend over or cross a 90 degree plane.  all i had was one of my walking sticks with me.  i pulled the dispenser towards me, and lifted it up and onto  my lap with the walking stick.....by now my husband had decided i had been in the ladies room a little too long so he shows up in the ladies room.......... :D
needless to say, the dispenser was carried out discreetly and handed to the manager.......
dinner was on them.......

we have a 7 day trip coming up to arizona prior to my surgery on the first.   i plan to enjoy.  i am hoping and wishing i don't have to have a transfusion this time, but it's all good.  i know what to expect this time around.  this spring i may be in good enough shape to divide hives! if not, will  figure it out...........and  5 months from my surgery i will be in montana........FISHING!

i want to thank everyone for your posts, encouragement, support, well wishes and prayers!

it's a new year and a good year!!!

Godspeed on your next journey Riverbee!

Many of the accommodations described in your last post mimic our experience as my wife and I grow older.

I bought one of these Ergobaum Crutches for our next unscheduled need for a crutch.  It has its own horn, walking light, reflector, and many many other features for you during your recuperation.  :-)

I've always found that the worst part of having surgery is waiting for the day of the surgery :-\\ I've had several and so far never had a problem, except, ??? i still don't agree with the therapist about walking with a cane? He told me if you have your left knee replaced you use the cane on your right side? and if you have your right knee replaced you use the cane on your left side? I gave the cane back to him, and he said your going to need it for a couple of weeks. I told him that if i start to fall i don;t want something in my hand on the wrong side i'm falling, that i'll need both hands to catch myself. He just laughed ,gave it back and said do it your way. He;s a good kid, i called him Dr. Wrong way, and he called me Hillbilly. :D . I'll put in a word or two for the man up there,But i'm sure he's not ready to deal with some Hippy Squirt for awhile yet. . Your buddy. Jack

Riverbee, you're not called Riverbee for nothing.  You know how to flow with the stream and successfully move on ahead with the current. You will undoubtedly do as well with your second hip replacement as you did with your first.  The most amazing part of it all is how you always manage to see the upside of what happens, and bring smiles to the faces of everyone in the process.
Come February 1st, I'll be thinking of you and praying for your speedy return to painless normalcy.   Three cheers for Mr. Rb, who accompanies you and gives his assistance and encouragement all the way.

THANKS!!! i appreciate all the thoughts, encouragement,  prayers and well wishes!!!  thank you, thank you!!!

ef, loved your analogy!!!  i do try my best to 'flow with the stream' but sometimes flat out FALL DOWN in it!................. :D :D :D

bakers, i am not 'tough' but just guess i just motor on irregardless?  i think we all do!

lee............LOL, nice crutch there........... :D i opted for these walking sticks, (2).  i purchased them prior to my first hip surgery, and prior to my trip to alaska, they served me well!  the cool thing about this stick (not looking like a cane) they adjust, (3 sections) and can telescope down to 18 or 19 inches to fit in a carry on bag, or whatever for travel!  also can be use not only as a cane but the grip doubles to haul/leverage one up an incline. this stick has pointy ends to manuever through different terrain....... dirt, gravel, snow, etc and 'baskets' you can add for either regular turf or snow, and also protective covers for the pointy ends for hard surfaces .....not only as a cane but the grip doubles to haul/leverage one up an incline. this stick has pointy ends to manuever through different terrain....... dirt, gravel, snow, etc and 'baskets' you can add for either regular turf or snow, and also protective covers for the pointy ends for hard surfaces .....these are awesome sticks!

REI Walker Power Lock Staff

also, when i was in alaska i purchased two of these hiking medallions and glued them on my sticks..............

......................... :D

styling sticks, received many compliments on them. my surgeon thought they were awesome and have helped a number of folks looking for something more functional ............

yes jack opposite side.............for me although i had the left  hip replaced, (would normally use a cane on the right side) i use on the left side because the right hip is the gimpin' one now............LOL!  for awhile was using two of these walking sticks to help me with balance, etc, now only one.  if my r hip wasn't the gimper i'd be free of gimp gear!!!!............ :D

I wonder how I lived so long without that particular gimp gear, do they give you a commission?  ;-)

LOL lee!!!

these sticks are the best, and no, i didn't receive a commission. i might have to 'hit' REI up for a discount on my next purchase from them and demonstration of their product!  the sticks are made for REI by KOMPERDELL (austria).  if anyone is into hiking, skiing, these really are awesome!
i hike, but don't ski........lol, no skiing for me anymore!

you would also laugh........i bought these little adjustable Nite Ize micro bungees. i used one to clip on and keep on one stick (the nylon or whatever it is hand grip)........lol, so i could clip it to myself (run through a belt loop or d ring) or clip to the other stick while cruising around, long enough bungee to not interfere with gimping around............ :D
dropping them was frequent without the bungee on, although i  could pick up a stick when using both, using the bungee, no dropping...... :D  i used the other on the reacher/grabber............ :D

it's kind of a situation when you drop your car/house keys, then your stick, and then your reacher/grabber............and everything is laying on the floor/ground and can't bend over to retrieve all 3............don't ask me how i know this.........  ;D

Nite Ize Cam Jam Adjustable Micro Bungee

gimp gear.......LOL!  it's true though!

it has been 6 months since my last surgery (left hip replacement).........it has been a long haul for me in many ways and now getting ready for the next one. some say i am crazy for doing this within 6 months?
my next surgery on the other hip is monday feb 1st............barring any viral infection!
we were in arizona for a week last week, and 4 of the folks had viral infections, ranging from common colds to severe upper respiratory infections, and an ear infection.  needless to say i was anal retentive about staying away..........i want this surgery done and over with, with no set backs or delays because of a virus. mr rb came down with a pretty good dose of a common cold, fevers, chills, cough, etc.....sorta paranoid about catching it.  so far, so good!
this week has been getting ready for the surgery, preop doc appointments...etc.  all is good.  what i didn't know or understand, (until now)   was the blood typing?  i thought once your blood was typed this wouldn't change.  it doesn't........DUH.........but what does change is the anti bodies in your blood, especially if one has had a blood transfusion.........one carries those antibodies..........another DUH!!!  your blood type and antibodies present must match any transfusion you receive. so my surgeon will have me typed again next friday, 4 days before surgery, in the event i will require another transfusion this time around.

wish me well!

I wish you well.  And when my ex would get strep throat I kept a can of lysol close at hand to follow behind him in the house so no one else got it from things he touched.
