State Fair!
« on: September 13, 2015, 11:01:58 am »
The husband and I have volunteered to work at the state wide beekeeping booth at the state fair tomorrow.  I think it's going to be a lot of fun.  I can't think of anything much more fun that talking to people about bees and beekeeping.

Have fun. did They get their hands on a flow hive for display? They are recognized by a large percentage of the public and create a draw and a lot of interest.

apis, there wasn't a flow hive for display, but there was and a small chain link at each corner separating the various components of the hive.  I hope that was a clear explanation of the display because I thought it was pretty clever.
I was disappointed that only one person expressed interest in becoming a beekeeper and inquired about a club in her area.  There was lots of inquiries about local honey in regards to allergies.  My pat answer was to get to know the beekeeper at your local farmer's market.
No one questioned the price of the various honey containers, which makes me think that people perceive honey to be a quality product.  I thought the pricing was quite fair.  We sold 5 one gallon bottles to one couple.  They weren't questioning the price.
Time flew by but I sure was pooped at the end of my shift.  Lots of fun.

Havent worked in a few years up at state fair.  The honey sticks and I believe a honey candy was a big hit with the kids as was the honey for adults.  The good thing about the State fair board is they give the kansas honey producers association an exclusive to sell honey during the fair

We get asked about honey and if we have it for sale but it is busy enough just talking about bees never mind looking after honey sales also. I am thinking about doing a honey extracting demonstration and if I did I would sell the honey that was just extracted (extracted the day before). 3 demonstrations, with a supers each demonstration by 5 days.

I reread what I wrote on 9/15, and I think I left something out.
There was a langstroth hive on display.  It was hanging with the individual pieces of hive suspended by a small chain link connected at the 4 corners.  You could see the individual components of the hive without lifting or touching because they were suspended, in order, in the air.  I thought it was very clever.

One end of the booth encouraged questions and discussions.  That was the end with the langstroth, books for sale, and observation hive.  The end I worked focused on selling products.  Everyone wanted a free taste of the creamed honey flavors.  We were non stop action at my end.
