Spotted this on my Grand Canyon trip
« on: November 22, 2015, 04:25:33 pm »
My wife planned the trip.  If I were to be honest I really didn't want to go.  But, she wanted to hike the Grand Canyon to celebrate her birthday so I put a smile on my face and loaded up my backpack.  We ended up putting up almost 40 miles over 4 days of hiking and camping.
On day two we were checking out one of the drainage canyons when one of our fellow hikers asked, "what is that?"
I looked up and what I saw made the trip for me.  There, about 50 ft up the canyon wall , was what appeared to be an active honey bee hive.  Pretty cool.

I'm starting to think that the bees are keeping me...

Very cool Keith. African most likely being in that area of the country. Wouldn't want to get to close to test out that theory with out protection.

How about that?  It pays to be a good sport.  You won't see anything like that back home.

There's a lot of truth in both of those sentences. It truly is an awe inspiring place

Did you do the mule rides along the trrail?   When I think of The Grand Canyon, I always hear in my mind's ear, the music that, long ago, served as the background to the adverts for Pall Mall cigarettes.  (I loved the music, but never touched Pall Mall.)

The hive was on the North wall facing South.

No mule rides. Those poor creatures would never survive having me on their backs.
We did use the mules to haul the tents and food down for us though.  We all hiked in with 15-20 lb packs.  10.5 miles in to base camp and then daily hikes from that point of 6-8 miles.
The trail was the Hualapai Hilltop trail

Thanks for all the pictures PK!  Felt like I was there with you...

Hiking was my favorite thing in life when I was younger.  Had both knees injected yesterday, so those days are over.  Enjoyed every one of those pictures.  Most interesting picture was of the boulder with conglomerate rocks in the voids of it...how can that happen?

that is a wishing rock.  The goal is to make a wish and place your stone on the rock in the most unique spot.  The more unique the spot the greater the chances of your wish coming true
