Birds and some ramblings
« on: February 26, 2016, 09:15:37 am »
Reading the posts about rats, I see there are a lot of bird lovers/feeders here.

Birds are indirectly related to our decision to get back into beekeeper. Wife has been feeding the birds since we moved into our current home, about three years ago. We have ranchers behind our house with lots of brush and bird habitat.

Then Wife started a garden as part of her back to nature journey. So now we are buying hives, bees, etc. to pollinate her garden.

Back to birds ...

About a month ago, we spotted a pair of roadrunners in our backyard. They even ventured into our front yard. "Cool!" We thought. They'll help keep the snake population down!

Then, one morning we were watching one of the roadrunners prowling around one of the bushes along our back fence. Suddenly she did a quick jump, twisting in mid air toward the bush behind her ...

and she snatched a small bird that was perched on a branch!

So much for peace and serenity in the back yard.

WM,

Wow, didn't know that about roadrunners! We have them here and I always thought of them as lizard or snake eaters.

Hi Wman :) I've been a backyard birder for many years. We always have a dog and they are trained to keep the neighborhood cat's out of the yard, the cat's CANNOT have my birds, if I can help it, eh hem. The hawks do come into the yard and snag a small bird infrequently. That is the only preditor I allow into the yard to find food because I love the raptors. And I have 2-3 lizards each year and I know that they get a square meal a day from my beehives  ;) 8)
