Blueblood's First Cut Out 2016
« on: April 23, 2016, 07:18:13 pm »
First post since last year I think.  Was reeling in a bluegill when I my phone rang.  Tree man said he fell a gum tree with bees.  I went home, threw the gear in the truck and off I went.  I cut three sections from the tree to get to the bees.  I didn't have time to save the brood comb and some of it was busted anyway.  Filming the chainsaw action was not possible either.  It was just all business!  I found the queen in the third cut, top part of the hive where the honey was.  I clipped her up and put her in the hive.  I stopped vacuuming and set the hive close to the cut out hive to allow them to march in.  Will have to return for them tonight or tomorrow night.  I am excited for this season.  It's almost ready to let loose!  I am trading these bees to new keep for a small chicken coop and rhode islands to finally start my venture with chickens.

Nice Job Blue!!
Wish you were closer, I'd give you my chickens!  Cant find enough people to give the eggs to, and I can only eat so many!!  Now that the wife isnt here I am having greater difficulty keeping up, so the chickens have to GO... we can get more when she returns. The chicken fort stays.

Nice to see you back Dave. I hope you took the brood out of the log and shook the bees off of it, otherwise the bees will not leave it to join the queen.

I sure did Apis.  I cut it all out and put it in a bag.  I believe I got it all.  If I had more time and help, I could have saved about four to five frames of brood.  Shame.  But, it's early yet in the season and they will do well.

Just hope that the brood was the 3rd round for this year !st round bolsters the winter population replacing the ones that have died. 2nd round replacing the rest of the winter bees. the 3rd round becomes the hive population build up bees, These brood if lost is not as stressful on the bees. If you are concerned about the age of the bees, a frame of capped brood from a strong colony would help the population. Judge it by the weather your experiencing and how colonies are progressing in your area. Keep in mind that feral colonies have not been stimulated by early feeding.

Nicely done Blue.  Looking forward to seeing the "documentation" of more captures as the season moves on.
Trading the hive in for a coop of chickens is the way to go----living bees for living chicks, and I assume the bee's woodwork is in exchange for the chicken's coop.

Thanks Ef! Apis was right about the brood comb.  I left a little in there apparently.  I had to vac several thousand bees.  All ended well though.  It was cool this morning and the bees were slow.  I helped the new keep successfully install his bees near noon today.  Returned home and found Swarm #1 and #2 in my bee yard!  I will post video as soon as I can get them downloaded.
