Lazy- '''I found out that you cannot get these jars anymore. The best you can order is the Ball 2 quart small mouth jars as far as I have found'''

Very true, your going to have to hit the local thrift shops and antique stores to find these nice glass gallon jars.

What about a gallon glass pickle jar. Has a different lid that's not as available as mason jar lids.

The pickle jars have a wider mouth and wont fit into my feeders. When I reach the point that I don't have enough jars I will simply have to widen the holes to fit the larger mouth jars. In the meantime I will have to put my mother on a mission to find more of these old gallon jars.   Avoiding breaking those jars became important! I dislike having mismatched equipment.. its sort of like using all medium frames for hives and supers.. having BOTH types of jars means I will be constantly taking the wrong jars to the wrong feeders.
If it EVER warms up, I am going to revamp the storage area behind the store for a safer place to keep the jars and my growing plethora of wooden ware.

I may just go ahead and make my holes larger to fit the pickle jars. That way if I break one I can get another jar fairly easy.

I hear ya on the equipment matching though.

Lazy- I'm always prowling our vintage stores. Always. So if you want to, take a pic of the exact jar and lid you want and I'll prowl for it. I do this for other people too, it's not a problem. I don't care about shipping. One of the antique stores here has lots of jars. Just say the word, don't be bashful.

Does feeding several hives from a one point source, aid in spreading diseases from hive to hive?  Have you done this successfully over a period of years?  It's just a curious mind thing.

It might be detrimental with the things that would be transferred by contact, which drifting drones and workers do by default. Its one of the reasons the Mites spread so explosively fast.. Beyond that I have not seen any ill effects. To get most other diseases I would think the bees would have to transfer syrup from one hive to another, IE; Robbing it from the combs in order to transfer AFB etc..  But I am always trying to pay attention in case my methods or beliefs are proven incorrect!

I know of quite a lot of open feeding by different individuals as well as Commercial beekeepers, and have not HEARD of problems.. but sometimes you need to ask the right questions to get the right answers.

Plug out a 2x10 cut off(square) with a hole saw of the appropriate size and tack/hive nail the thing to the feeder box with 2 nails.

LOL, Sorry, just read that..  IF, this stuff draws in the deer I will be very happy with it. No more walking to find the things to fill my freezer with!!
We have tracks all over the field and even across the pond, through the hives in front and hives in back.. they are EVERYWHERE like rats in a feed mill..   We need open season on them for about three years to get their numbers cut down to manageable level.

California does a pretty good job with game managment. It's rare that we don't bring in a buck or two... or three.
