the one thing about jeeps, you don't buy them for good gas mileage........... :D  i even took out the backseat to get another mile to the gallon...... :D

My youngest son drives a 2006 Jeep Wrangler.  I offered to buy him a new vehicle this month, but he loves his jeep and wants to drive it a lot further.  It has 102,000 miles on it.  Oh well, it saved me some money.

too funny!  i did lee! thanks for the laugh! it did work! a little less weight!

a story..... i was really going through the gas a couple years ago......i took the jeep into my mechanic. sure enough the fuel filter/pump was leaking.  this is a simple fix, and an inexpensive part........well, not on jeeps.  these  are mounted above the gas tank........so a full gas tank had to be emptied and removed to get to the filter/pump/regulator to replace the whole works........so $50 parts cost me about 350 bucks........... :D

lazy, 'it's a jeep thing', as 'they' say. my prince has offered to buy me a bran spanking new jeep several times......i say what for? i don't like the new ones, and besides, i sure love mine and it still runs, and runs good!

$1.89 here I just filled up when I was almost on E for $40.00.  I told the son in Kuwait what gas was and he says ah yes back to the good ole days,  I had to laugh out loud on that one. :D

177.9 cents at one station in town yesterday. I had planed on getting 5 gallons for my tractor but the lines were backed up on both streets as the station is on a corner for two busy roads.
Decided to just wait and hope the price doesn't spring back up.

Filled up EVERY can we have, thinking about filling a couple of barrels as well....
   i am working on setting the money aside to replace the fuel system in my dually. It will then burn Gas, Alcohol, or a combination there of....   when the gas prices hit $5.00 again i can run E85, OR make my own alcohol to run in it.. plenty of corn nearby.

Yes it is a JEEP thing. I still have my 85 to get to lakes that don't have the best boat launches in the world and to get deer out of deep in the woods spots. I took a week end shortly after I got it and drained oil out of every place that held it refilled both pigs, trans,transfur case with a mix of some super slippery gear oil and STP. Now I can get 17 MPG in 2 wheel drive instead of 14 like at first. It has 185,000 plus miles on it now. Body is about rusted off to the point been thinking about buying a SS body.

Kare was wanting to replace her (her 3d one) 1997 Jeep. Didn't want a Jeep because the body side moldings only came in one color and it didn't look good she said with the color she wanted. She got a 2000 Dodge Durango. Not many days have went by since then she hasn't wished she had a Jeep instead. She has nothing right now except a 1976 Cordoba to drive.

I have never owned a jeep.. I have put a lot of 350's and lately, 383's in them..  Looked at buying several, but the price that was being asked was pretty silly..(IMHO)   I can buy a chevy truck in twice as good shape for half the money, so thats what I usually do instead..  The chevys are cheaper to work on, and easier to get parts for.. maybe one day I will chance on a jeep that appears to be worth the money being asked.  Nothing against them at all, just have not come across the right deal yet.
   I will say, a nice 383 with aftermarket fuel injection makes a jeep into a monster..   Running my mud truck over the years it has been beat a few times..  Those few times added up to being beat by a JEEP in all but one situatuion..  That was at the state fair, and they put me up against a Nitro burning 43 ford pickup..   Its hard for a poor boy to compete with that kind of money!

@the other Lazy:

Many years ago a friend of mine had a small block chevy engine installed in a jeep pickup.  It worked great, but he was forever wearing out, and tearing out, drive line items such as universal joints, axles and drive lines.  How do your guys avoid that?

Gas today is 169.9 cents a gallon. Diesel is still over 305.9 a gallon and that is what I need now.

Just keep them greases and do go ripping and tearing.

Paid $1.99 for super today!!!

   Shooter..  a lot depends on your intended use for the vehicle..   MOST guys I do the swaps for use them in the mud out here.. we dont have ROCKS to climb about on, no mountains etc..  its CLAY MUD, its about the slimiest most tenacious stuff you ever had cling to your boots and tires..   It doesnt CAUSE breakages as such, but it does get into EVERYTHING causing it to wear out fast..
    I install a lot of Drag race u joints.. they have a solid X with no hole for grease and they are very strong, but not being greasable means they dont last as long..... but as stated above, they dont last long in this mud anyhow...
    Breakage isnt common, until you get into the big tire and outlaw classes..   AND get into the air..  When you land with all that horsepower and reciprocating mass at the end of the axles coming to a dead stop... well....  I figure you probably get the picture..

   If I could keep this on the ground I never broke an axle or a u joint.. Unfortunately, most mud pits are rough, with 46" tires and an 800 HP big block, it was not prone to staying on the ground;

   This one on also liked to get air, but with less weight and smaller tires we wore out more axle joints and u joints than we broke.  It "only" had a small block in it..    ;D

    HAVING the power doesnt mean you need to USE it..   OK, so maybe it does...    Add that much power to anything and you will start to break and wear out components not meant for that much abuse..

   A stock car or truck with 200 HP from the factory doesnt hold up long under abuse when you upgrade to 500 HP, so everything else has to be upgraded to match..
   Thats my normal speech that most guys ignore, till later....

lazybkpr:

I understand your last post fully, and it makes a lot of sense.  Dang, you do some really neat, good work.  Those tires on the large truck look like something from an old model Ford tractor.

Thanks, that was a lot of good information.

scott, jeeps are expensive, and not built the way the older ones were..........that's one of the reasons why i don't want a new one. my 2000 wrangler suits me just fine.

gas today was 1.94. went to fill it up, freezing temps with frigid windchill temps at 30F-. still had somewhere between about a 1/4 of a tank left, nice........$24 bucks instead of $48.............

Haven't been to town but the news reported last night gas prices jumped 50 cents yesterday here.
