lindsey,
awesome photo and story! really tugged at my heart! the mothers do not reject them, and like rob and scott said, how amazing the mothers hide them and they won't move, or play in open areas and the mother stays hidden with a watchful eye.
we have 'rescued' a number of fawns and returned them to their mothers. several years ago, there was a young fawn caught on a small island on our river, floodwater's rising and rain coming down. it wouldn't have been long before he would have been swept away. the only reason i found him, he was 'bawling' and i could hear from a distance away.......the mother was on the other side of the river just frantic. mr. river and i waded out to the island (short distance) with a towel and heavy blanket and carried him across to the other side. i held him close to me in my arms to dry him off with the towel and blanket, shivering and cold. the mother took off to the edge of woods nearby, but she watched us. i let him loose, at first he was disoriented and let out some crys. we sat and waited. she let out a few 'calls' and he ran right for the woods to his waiting mother.
