One of my most memorable bike rides
« on: May 29, 2014, 08:41:10 pm »
Look what I almost ran over with my bike!!! I had to move this baby out of harms way from others and couldn't resist taking a snap shot. And no it is not true the mother will reject a fawn that has been touched. I googled it before putting in a safe place  :D

It is amazing how the moms hide them and leave them and they don't move until she comes back.   A couple of years ago a mom left one right against a glass wall in our lab.  The fawn stayed curled up against the glass and never moved for 6 hours.

Wow that is amazing! I honestly thought the fawns was dead it was so still. I figured mom was out and would be back for the baby. It was hard not to bring it home ! I moved it about 5 feet from where it was, off of the bike path. Hopefully mom returns soon

I'm sure she was in the area..   Had a friend try to convince me to help him catch one a little older than that one... I refused, he got stitches...   I still razz him about it...     Got the SNOT beat out of him by Bambi!

lindsey,
awesome photo and story! really tugged at my heart! the mothers do not reject them, and like rob and scott said, how amazing the mothers hide them and they won't move, or play in open areas and the mother stays hidden with a watchful eye.

we have 'rescued' a number of fawns and returned them to their mothers.  several years ago, there was a young fawn caught on a small island on our river, floodwater's rising and rain coming down. it wouldn't have been long before he would have been swept away.  the only reason i found him, he was 'bawling' and i could hear from a distance away.......the mother was on the other side of the river just frantic. mr. river and i waded out to the island (short distance) with a towel and heavy blanket and carried him across to the other side.  i held him close to me in my arms to dry him off with the towel and blanket, shivering and cold.  the mother took off to the edge of woods nearby, but she watched us. i let him loose, at first he was disoriented and let out some crys. we sat and waited. she let out a few 'calls' and he ran right for the woods to his waiting mother.
i keep wild things in a box..........™

Had one no bigger than that scare the beejeebers out of me at my Grand Pre yard. I was working one of the hives when I heard this rustling in the bushes 5 feet behind me. My first thought was BEAR!!!!
I turned and there it was, a tiny fawn that had been lying there the whole time, and it had just stood up. I quietly closed up the hive and left. I went back about 4 hours later to see if I could work on the yard again, but it was all curled up in the same spot so I skipped the yard that day.

phew I would have had the same reaction.. Im no fan of bears! I've had one close encounter with one at night  >:( I was so close I could hear it breathing ... A fawn on the other hand... I probably would have sat there for hours just looking at it lol  ;D

Perry, no thank you on bears...  I've only had one encounter with bears before...a mother and two cubs.  Scagway, AK...and they were between us and the rest of the world (our vehicle).  Thankfully it all worked out and though we didn't have a still for them to carry off we did manage to hang on to our Crenshaw County Rye that we had with us. ;)  I've got an old picture somewhere that I shot over my shoulder as they were walking across a bridge behind us...I'll see if I can find it.

Fawns control a lot of power.  Several years ago I was looked for a "downed" R/C airplane.  I was hunting in what we affectionately call "The Plum Thicket" and which you pretty much have to crawl through...probalby 12-15 acres of it.  Anyhow, I'm slowly worming my way through there trying to spot the glint of a wing or something when up jumps a little fawn and starts running, scrambling, and bleating it's little heart out.  I smiled as it disappeared into the brush.  About 5 seconds later I heard a deep snort and the sound of small limbs cracking under hoof, and then another snort about 15 feet from the last one, and one more....uh, they almost had me surrounded!!!!!! Suddenly Christmastime popped into my mind.....and yeah, it was that tune..........."Grandma got run over by a reindeer......"  I hope it doesn't stick in your head like it did mine....... ;D

Awe Perry bless you... that was the right thing to do ~

I don't know if I would have done that, maybe maybe not, I might have just worked in the hive in the wonderful presence that tiny sweet baby
