Curing cancer and other ailments?
« on: December 01, 2014, 06:44:56 pm »
OK, I have a rotti I had a mast cell tumor removed from on September 11. It would cost nearly $200 to find out how advanced it was so I chose not to know.  Stage 3 is bad and stage 4 is metastasized and dead dog walking.  We got great margins on the mast and on a cyst that was not cancerous.

He started chewing his feet due to histamine (which mast cells give off) again on about 10/6.  So I put him on benadryl, but he hated the taste had to have it every 4 hours and went off his feed. So I put him on zyrtec 10 mg. And that worked for a few days and I had to go to 20 mg. And that has done fair, but by November 15th he visibly had less energy and was laying around in his crate and I had the kids come out to see him just in case it was the last time. November 17th I spotted a swollen lymph node in his abdomen and on the 18th I had him ride in the truck with me to cheer him up. Getting those bellyrubs in.  I'm in a shar pei health information group because I have a shar pei mix, and they have special health needs.  I had been keeping them apprised of Bronx condition, someone suggested giving him turmeric, and I was sprinkling the spice on his food but nothing fancy.

When I saw the swollen lymph node I followed a link someone sent me to a group of people giving turmeric paste to their pets with arthritis and several types of cancer.  I learned to make the paste and made it on Saturday November 22nd and started giving it to Bronx.

This was a "Hail Mary" not expecting much.  And the dog really started bouncing around the yard this past weekend. After a week, twice daily, about half a teaspoon hidden in braunschweiger.   I do not know if it is going to cure his cancer.  But I would not have let him suffer and he certainly was looking like he was in pain.  He is not in pain anymore.

My shar Pei and I are starting on turmeric paste for our creaky joints.  Which it has an excellent track record with. (the cancer stuff is experimental)  Just figured I'd share some results.  Good news is plenty scarce these days.  Plain dry uncooked turmeric does not work as well as the paste, but raw turmeric (that has not had the curcumin removed) when taken with either coconut oil or olive oil and freshly ground black pepper is almost as good as the paste.  Grocery store turmeric (I used Spice Islands) is not supposed to be as good, but someone tell my dog that. Next time I need it I will get it from a tested source. For now I am thrilled.

Good on you gypsi.  If you're going to have a pet, give it your all, and it appears that's what you are doing.

Bronx is approximately 7 years old. he was approximately 1.5 years old estimated when I adopted him Jan 9 2009, about 3 days after he was due to be put down. He is literally bouncing around the house now. I have NEVER seen anything like this

My black Lab had a fatty mass hanging down on his chest for 4 years. I got tired of looking at it. I had the vet take a look at it. They did something to it. Two days later I had to put him down. This happen this year back in March. He was 14 years old. Wife and I agreed no more dogs for awhile. I missed him a lot. We got a new lab one month later. Shes my new baby now. I love her. Boy shes got a lot of energy. I new my old lab was dyeing he was old. I couldn’t let go. There part of the family. I made one mistake. I should have gotten my new lab first. Let them adjust living together. When its time to put the old one down, it wont be so hard to do. I still miss him but the new one is taking over now.

I lost Bronx's "brother" Spike, German Shepherd/Border collie mix, in January 2013. He lost 15 lbs in 3 days, a pancreatic tumor caused diabetes insipidous.  I walked him, we played ball, he rode in the seat of the truck with me and I took him in for blood work and brought him home to bury him.  He was 9. He should have lived to 15.

I dumped corn and soy out of my dogs diets and my diet then and there. I had Bronx, and Camelo, and Bella for company, but I spent 2 years training a border collie to lose him in his prime. I buy no Purina products. (Spike and Bronx were raised on Purina) I buy no GMO soy and corn products sprayed with Roundup, not for my dogs to eat and not for me. They are on Kirkland chicken and rice formula, not the best but I can afford it, and it doesn't have the bad stuff. And I have just about dropped wheat, which is often sprayed with glyphosate before harvest. I only buy pure cane sugar so the white sugar I shouldn't eat is at least not laced with glyphosate

From my dogs diets and from mine.  The fact that Bronx is on a super diet probably helps.  And when the mast cell was tested and before its removal I had Bronx on big doses of Benadryl to stop the mast from flooding his body with histamine.  I can't change the world but I did change my kitchen.

I miss having a dog.  I travel too much to have one.  Maybe when I retire I will keep a ranch dog, although I doubt it.  I become so attached to pets that it is like losing a family member, and at my age, I am desperately trying to avoid sad moments.  So many of my friends are leaving this life that it seems an almost constant funeral announcement.  I am driving 150 miles this evening to an old pals mother's viewing.  I gave away my last horse a couple of years back to a great cowgirl.  I still stop by to visit him a few times a year.  Pets grow on you.  I think they are good for one's soul, it's akin to keeping a garden or BEES.

I wish there was a cure for all of the cancers, but there seem to be so many cancers with differing bio make-ups that I don't think a universal cure all is any time soon.  I hope I am wrong.  Anyway, keep up the experiments, one never knows.

I'm not just doing it for the dog Riverrat.  I am a cancer survivor too, don't know why, but really a friend of mine got melanoma at the same time I did, and she died in summer 2004. She had the health insurance and the best doctors.  I had the garden and the sunshine and the fresh vegetables.  We never know.

But dietary stuff shows the best hope at prevention.  I do not know how long Bronx will be with me, but I am continuing the experiment.  A good dog is a time investment. Puppies are cute, but raising and training and bonding are a good investment, and it is a shame to lose one early

Not to change the subject, but when i was growing up it was a common thing to see dogs with the mange(sp? was wondering if that wasn't a form of cancer, never see or hear of it anymore? I think dad would treat it with motor oil. Jack

There are 2 types of mange and we know how to treat them now. Sarcoptic mange is caused by mange mites and is treated with a dip that is pretty effective.  Motor oil would also work.

Demodex mites are normally found on your dog's skin and yours.  When a dog suddenly drops fur after vaccination generally the cause is demodex mange. A normal immune system combats damage from the mites effectively.  A dog with demodex mange has an immune deficiency disorder and should not be bred. One of mine did this. She also caught parvo after vaccination, and after recovery from the parvo I got her shots and she dropped all the fur on her back.  I used the dip for sarcoptic mange combined with some thing else (I forget what) and waited til she was a year old to be sure she would live before I got her spayed. She outgrew the immune deficiency.  Many dogs do but it is hereditary so always spay/neuter.

When I was a kid in Kentucky our dogs were always covered with hundreds of ticks. When ticks turned up in my yard here, I sprayed the darn yard and I did it correctly and safely and didn't kill my fish pond.

Gypsi, have you ever considered bee venom therapy for Bronx's tumor? We have a vet here in town that does bvt for dogs and cats that have arthritis and other ailments. This vet would but a stinger right where the tumor is. He can also inject the venom into the tumor. It's interesting to watch the dogs come in, sit down or lay down and the vet places the stinger, and the dog walks out with his owner.

No Jen I haven't.

I spent all my vet money having the tumor removed, apparently after it metastasized.  If I have something that works (and he is certainly more comfortable with new lumps (untested lumps) shrinking) I am probably not going to stop it and try something else.

I fired the vet that did his exam this summer, since I specificially took him for a lump exam and was told he was fine and no one suggested a needle biopsy.

After they wasted $500 of mine successfully killing off the intestinal flora of 4 dogs earlier this summer.

Bronx would be dead if he hadn't jammed his shoulder up on 9/8 and ended up at an emergency vet where I happened to ask about his itchy foot.  I got a new vet we got surgery we got good margins and all a Texas vet can tell me is keep him on antihistamines for itching and I am doing that.  I don't go to texas doctors much myself either.

California is a whole different planet, especially when it comes to health care and vet care I suspect.

Texas:  we had a vet in West Fort Worth whose tech was rough with a big dog and injured it so they lied to the owner and said the dog had a fatal disease and had to put it down. They then locked the dog in a crate, he was almost never walked, and milked him for blood for 4 years.

A disgruntled employee called the dog's owner and sure enough they went in with police and got their dog.
The vet clinic is still open

I have had a mediocre vet who didn't kill too many animals since 2001. Charged me $900 to torture my cat and failed to cure an infection which I cured for $30 via the internet and zymox but overall he was approximately qualified to read a heartworm test and when the 2nd ear blew up the cat and I rode that out at home, he lived another 8 years. He just wouldn't recommend any medicine he didn't stock, even if what he stocked doesn't do anything. Ooops.

Until Bronx I didn't really hunt for another vet because most of them are bad.  When Bronx needed his shoulder seen I got on a private review list and quizzed 40 members and found the vet I have now. They are reasonable and pretty good but they are not advanced or on the leading edge of anything..  I'll keep mixing turmeric paste.  And no I didn't ask the vet's permission.

Bravo Gypsi! I have another suggestion for tumeric as well. I have arthitis pain and have been making my own tumeric/ginger tea  every day for about a year now. At your local health food stores you can buy tumeric root, it looks much like ginger root. I thinly slice up about 2 inches of this root. I boil up or nuc a 12 or 16 ounce glass (not plastic) of water, it's got to be 'Hot' like tea water. Then drop the sliced root into the hot water to steep for about 20 minutes, you can also stir and press the sliced root while it's steeping. Then I drink it down or drink it thru the day. It really works to calm down pain.

I was thinking that you could add this tumeric tea to Bronx's water bowl. The nice thing about tea's like this is that the tea goes into the stomach, which goes into the blood stream right away, bypassing all the stuff the liver has to do to get the medicine into the system.   :)
